Many fragrance bottles are beautiful works of art that are meant to be treasured and proudly displayed on your vanity. However, they’re not the most sustainable when it comes to beauty products. Yes, they’re housed in glass, but that glass bottle is housed in a cardboard box that’s oftentimes then wrapped in plastic. To minimize this waste, more brands are embracing sustainability efforts via refillable fragrances. This is one of the biggest trends we’ve seen in the industry as of late. Buy the beautiful bottle once and then purchase larger-quantity refills to keep your signature scent full and flowing.
Refills tend to be more expensive because they hold more fragrance—some even up to 5 ounces. (Standard perfumes hold between 1.0 and 3.4 ounces.) Here’s what the refills typically look like (below), and they are very easy to use. First, remove the cap and pump from your perfume bottle. Then, hold your perfume bottle upright and insert the refill bottle. Most refill bottles have a twist cap with arrows notifying you which direction to turn to the cap to release the juice. Then reattach the pump and cap to your perfume bottle, and voila! You can save any additional perfume in the refill for later.

According to YSL Beauty, refilling helps to save 41 percent glass, 67 percent metals and 38 percent plastic.

Lancôme La Vie Est Belle Eau de Parfum (Starting at $86); Refill ($125)
The brand describes its cult-classic La Vie Est Belle EDP as “the fragrance of happiness.” In French, “la vie est belle” is an expression meaning “life is beautiful.” A floral gourmand, it combines an iris accord with earthy notes of patchouli, vanilla and spun sugar. According to Lancôme, its refillable bottles use 50 percent less glass, 46 percent less cardboard and 46 percent less plastic.

Part of the brand’s “Narcotics” collection of fragrances, this gourmand floral is undeniably sweet with a rich, creamy, addictive quality. The brand describes it as “exhilarating and unforgettable” thanks to top notes of neroli and bergamot, mid notes of orange blossom and a luscious marshmallow sugar accord, and a warm amber base.

Dior J’adore l’Or Eau de Parfum (Starting at $135); Refill (Starting at $160)
If you love Dior’s iconic floral J’adore, its sister scent l’Or is “all the gold of J’adore in an essential, pure concentrate.” It’s a celebration of orange blossom, jasmine grandiflorum and centifolia rose absolutes. Francis Kurkdjian, perfume creative director for Parfums Dior, “wanted to give this floral signature accents of purity by exaggerating the contours of the flowers, to bring out all their nuances and define a new texture, like enveloping liquid gold. A new, instantly attractive sensuality.” The refill is compatible with the 1.7 and 2.7 ounce bottles.

Chloé Eau de Parfum (Starting at $105); Refill ($168)
The brand’s signature fragrance is feminine and timeless, putting rose on a pedestal. Described as “immediately fresh and romantic, confident and distinctive,” it combines a trio of floral powdery notes: peony, lychee and freesia. The refill is made of 100-percent recycled aluminum and is only compatible with the 3.4-ounce bottle.
